“This video shook me to the core. It starts out looking at Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust but then quickly shifts to the topic of abortion. ”
It shook me to the core too.
I was disgusted that anyone would degrade the memory of all those murdered Holocaust victims by comparing it to abortion. Comfort should be ashamed of himself.
NotaScientist,
Can you tell me the time when a fetus becomes a human being?
Travis
Nope. But I can tell you when it’s not. Which is why I advocate that abortions, when necessary, happen as rarely and as early as possible.
NAS,
So, when are they not human? Also, within your worldview, why does it matter if they happen rarely or early?
Travis
“So, when are they not human?”
When they’re only a few cells. When no brain has had time to form.
“Also, within your worldview, why does it matter if they happen rarely or early? ”
Early because they aren’t viable humans yet. And the body naturally aborts all the time anyway. Rarely because it’s a medical procedure, and one should be using contraceptives, not constantly getting a medical procedure.
NAS,
So, a human isn’t a human until they have more than 3 cells?
Is a formed brain the test of being human or not?
Is this just your opinion?
Isn’t there an essential difference between saying “those are just a few cells,” and, “those few cells, if not aborted, can become a human (within your definition)”?
Travis
“Is a formed brain the test of being human or not?”
As the brain is the core of what we are as beings, I should hope so.
“Is this just your opinion? ”
Mine and that of many others.
“Isn’t there an essential difference between saying “those are just a few cells,” and, “those few cells, if not aborted, can become a human (within your definition)”?”
Sure they could. And so could sperm cells, given the right circumstances. Why should possibilities bother me?
NAS,
Is a majority of opinion the determiner of right and wrong?
There is a complete category error when you compare sperm cells with a growing organism that, according to your definition, will become a human. I think any rational person can see that.
Travis
“Is a majority of opinion the determiner of right and wrong?”
Nope, and I wasn’t saying it was.
“There is a complete category error”
How about a better analogy.
An acorn will become an oak tree given the proper conditions. But it isn’t an oak tree.
A fertilized egg or even a zygote or the early stages of a fetus will, given the proper conditions, become a human being. But it isn’t a human being.
NAS,
If a majority doesn’t determine right and wrong what does?
Also, an acorn that is in the ground and has started to grow is a tree or isn’t a tree? If no one came along and destroyed the ground in which that acorn was planted on would that acorn, most likely, grown into a visible tree?
Travis
“If a majority doesn’t determine right and wrong what does? ”
Reasoned, rational thought and critical thinking.
I believe I’ve made my point with the acorn analogy. An acorn will grow into an oak tree, but it isn’t an oak tree, and to treat it like it was an oak tree would be irrational.
NAS,
Your analogy fails because we aren’t talking about a seed we are talking about an organism that has already begun multiplying. If that acorn began to sprout roots you wouldn’t call it an acorn anymore. When it comes to human beings I think they are human at the moment of conception. They are human cells. It is a human organism. To suggest a zygote isn’t human is arbitrary and we all know where arbitrary morals and standards lead.
Travis
“When it comes to human beings I think they are human at the moment of conception. ”
Then the worst perpetrator of abortion is your god, since over half of all fertilized eggs are naturally aborted, through no cause of the woman.
NAS,
Man has no right to accuse God of sin. The fact is we all deserve death. Thats why babies die. However man has no right to take the life of a baby into their hands.
Travis
I watched the movie recently myself. As you can imagine, I didn’t think much of it. Longer comments here: http://crossexaminedblog.com/2012/02/13/ray-comforts-anti-abortion-video-180/
