Do You Have Freedom?

Tomorrow, Americans will be celebrating the birth of the United States of America. Surely, America has been a country that has fought for freedom. Here are what people, past to the present, say about freedom:

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves. -Abraham Lincoln

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same. -Ronald Reagan 

Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery. -Wayne Dyer

Freedom has always been the mantra of America. Freedom is a word that Americans have held on to since the country’s birth, and freedom is something that is worth standing for. But is the freedom America touts true freedom?

The answer to this question, from a biblical perspective, is no. The freedom that America fights so hard to keep, falls hopelessly short of the freedom that God can give. There is a bondage that holds every man down. It doesn’t matter what country you live in without Jesus Christ, you are not free. This is what Jesus says about the bondage of sin:

‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.’ -John 8:34, ESV

Everyone on earth suffers from sin. We are all practitioners in the art of sinning. Jesus says that because of our sin we are in bondage to that sin. Sin enslaves, dominates, and encompasses us. So, how can we experience freedom from this worldwide personal bondage? Jesus provides us with the answer:

‘The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’ -John 8:35-36

Jesus is the only one who can grant you true freedom. We celebrate the finite and incomplete freedom that America stands for on July 4th, but when our nation falls, will you still be free? Even though you may live in a nation that doesn’t have the freedoms Americans celebrate, are you truly free? Abraham Lincoln said:

In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free – honorable alike in what we give and what we preserve. We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.

Everyone with any conscience would agree that ending slavery in America is a noble purpose, but that freedom for those slaves is only a shadow of the true freedom that Christ can bring. This is what the apostle Paul says about Jesus’ power to free us from the bondage of sin:

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. -Galatians 5:1
