Can Atheists be Moral?

I recently did a broadcast talking about whether or not atheists can be moral. To break the tension, yes, they can. However, they have no basis, outside of their subjectivity, to ground their morals.

With that, there was one thing that I wanted to discuss. The topic of rape came up in the broadcast and I did not answer the question clearly enough. So, I want to give a better answer here. God hates rape. He detests rape. But, atheists like to bring up Deuteronomy 22:28-29, and say that a woman who is engaged to be married is forced to marry the man that rapes her. This isn’t a fair and honest look at the Scriptures because in Exodus 22:16-17 it says this:

If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife. 17 If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money equal to the bride-price for virgins.

In my broadcast, I pointed out that the father had the ability to refuse giving his daughter to the rapist. But, I did not reference this passage and that was my bad. Some may ask, why would a father ever give his daughter to the man who raped her? That’s a good question. And I don’t think any loving father would. The provision is probably for circumstances like date rape, not a rape that threatens to take the woman’s life if she doesn’t give in. The reason people make this distinction is because in Deuteronomy 22:25-27 it says this:

But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death. For this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor, 27 because he met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her.

Here we see clearly the punishment for rape…Death. God cares about women. He created them and loves them. He wants them to be protected from all types of crimes, including rape. Often times, atheists say that the Bible says women are just property of men. If women were merely property, then why would God’s punishment for rape be death for the man?

Women are not property, they are fearfully and wonderfully made. That’s what Christians believe and that’s what we’ll continue to say.

So, without further ado…
